Communicating Biomonitoring Results to Parents of Young Girls

Project Summary:

Health Research for Action conducted focus groups in English and Spanish with parents of girls in a biomonitoring study. We also developed recommendations for using health literacy principles to explain biomonitoring results. The Cohort Study of Young Girls’ Nutrition, Environment, and Transitions (CYGNET Study) is looking at chemical exposures in girls and possible effects. HRA’s objectives were:
• To learn how parents preferred to receive their daughters’ biomonitoring results.
• To assess parents’ knowledge about their daughters’ risks from chemical exposures.
• To assess parents’ understanding of the CYGNET Study goals and anticipated outcomes.
• To assess parents’ expectations about what they will learn from the study.
