Medi-Cal Choices
What Are My Medi-Cal Choices? is a decision-making guidebook for seniors and people with disabilities who receive Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program. It helps beneficiaries choose between regular Medi-Cal and Medi-Cal managed care plans by providing clear explanations of benefits, services, costs, where to go with problems, and how to find help.
The guidebook was written at a 4-6th grade level to present complex information for an audience with limited literacy skills. Other user-friendly features include question and answer sections and a decision checklist. The guidebook has been adapted into Spanish, Chinese, Braille, and three audio formats, and is currently being translated into nine other languages.
To develop the guidebook, HRA conducted research in five languages with beneficiaries, advocates, and health care providers. The guidebook was created for the California Department of Health Care Services, and is posted on the department's website. HRA also developed county-specific information to supplement the guidebook. What Are My Medi-Cal Choices? won the 2008 Outstanding Achievement in Health Literacy Award for published materials from the Institute for Healthcare Advancement.
